A visit by Thailand’s PM to Saudi Arabia is being seen by many as a warm up, following years of distancing and lack of diplomatic ties, and a falling out 30 years ago. As Thailand could benefit from tourism FROM Saudi, so Saudi itself could welcome Thai workers on a large scale as there, locals are usually unwilling to take on manual labour. Trade, too, could be high on the agenda.
Users of Siam Commercial Bank debit cards, until recently usable for online purchases as well as cash withdrawal have, as of this week, seen online buying unavailable UNLESS account holders download the SCB phone app. Only by signing up for the app can users switch ON the online buying facility and more. Many account holders have contacted us to ask why their cards suddenly stopped working, for subscriptions and online buying and we too had a similar problem. Phone banking apps are sometimes unpopular with users, especially middle aged and above who haven’t much trust in phone security BUT the bank insists this new way of banking is the way of the future and now is obligatory for anyone wanting to access previously available card features.

An initial supply of the Pfizer inoculation, designed especially for children arrives in Thailand today and will be used for youngsters with existing health issues. Within a short period, a much larger supply is due and will then be made available on school premises across the country to those between 5 and 12 and with parental consent. The shots are slightly different in design to those for adults as an adult dosage is too much for kids, and is produced by Pfizer with different packaging.
The police motorcyclist who killed a doctor at a pedestrian crossing in the capital and now faces numerous charges including her killing had, we were told, attempted to enter the monkhood. However, in a twist, the National Office of Buddhism opposed his ordination. With Thai media being told that with an ongoing case and serious charges, the initiation couldn’t be completed but that the decision to end his monkhood would rest with temple involved. Word is that he has chosen to quit the monkhood ahead of any formal decision.
As global markets and even crypto currency see’s huge setbacks, we are told to expect GOLD, Thailand’s effective second currency to rise in value dramatically. Experts predict that it could his close to 29,000 Baht per baht.
Meanwhile in our own province, Chonburi police have arrested 2 men accused of running an online gambing operation in the provincial capital. and it’s a big one. As computers show some 100,000 members and a monthly turnover of 100 million baht. The arrests followed raids conducted by the police cyber task force combined with local forces and the removal of computer equipment which is now being analyzed by forensic teams who will provide a full report.
And the Walk and Eat weekend feature that was popular prior to the arrival of the Omicron variant here is due to be revived according to Pattaya City Hall. February 5th through to the 27th will see the streets busy once again.
