Thailand logged 38 more Covid-19 fatalities and 3,618 new cases during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Wednesday morning.
There were 3,578 cases in the general population and 40 among prison inmates.
On Tuesday, 5,775 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 2,152,384 Covid-19 cases, with 2,067,149 complete recoveries so far.
The death toll stood at 20,941 during the third wave and 21,035 since the beginning of the pandemic.
The vast majority of Covid cases and deaths have occurred since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began.
The kingdom’s all-time 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was the 312 recorded on Aug 13. The highest number of cases was the 23,418 on Aug 13.
The vast majority of the Covid cases and deaths have occurred since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began.
Sumanee Wacharasin, hazard communication director of the Department of Disease Control, said the 38 new fatalities were between the ages of 25 and 92 years old, and included three Myanmar and a Lao nationals.
Bangkok logged the most new deaths at seven while another was reported in the adjacent province of Samut Prakan.
Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded nine more deaths – in Rayong (2), Ratchaburi (2), Phetchaburi (1), Chon Buri (1), Trat (1), Prachin Buri (1) and Suphan Buri (1).
The Northeast had one new fatality in Mukdahan.
The South reported 15 more deaths – in Nakhon Si Thammarat (4), Phatthalung (3), Trang (2), Yala (2), Pattani (1), Phangnga (1), Phuket (1) and Ranong (1).
The North saw five new fatalities in Chiang Rai, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, Tak and Sukhothai.
The 3,618 new cases included 3,562 local infections and 16 imported cases.
Of the local infections, 3,467 were confirmed at hospitals and 95 via mass testing.
Bangkok had 847 new cases, followed by 241 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 182 in Songkhla, 134 in Chiang Mai, 133 in Surat Thani, 109 in Chon Buri, 104 in Pattani, 86 in Phatthalung, 83 in Samut Prakan and 82 in Trang.
“The number of new daily cases in Bangkok still accounts for a quarter of the nationwide figure as it is a tourism pilot province where disease controls were eased,” Dr Sumanee said.
“New infections in Thailand are declining as expected. Only seven provinces logged more than 100 new cases each on a daily basis,” she said.
As new caseloads were falling despite country reopening on Nov 1, disease controls could be further relaxed, Dr Summanee said.
New clusters of Covid-19 infections were reported at workplaces and factories in Bangkok, Sing Buri, Chon Buri and Lamphun; at markets in Phitsanulok, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, Yala, Tak and Lamphun; at workers’ camps in Bangkok, Prachin Buri and Samut Prakan; at schools in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Samut Prakan and Ubon Ratchathani; at a military camp in Pattani; and at eateries in Ubon Ratchathani and Surat Thani. However, new cases were of only one digit in each cluster, she said.
The 16 imported cases were from the United Kingdom (3), Russia (2), Germany (3), the Netherlands (1), Ireland (1), France (1), Sweden (3), Vietnam (1) and Laos (1).
On Tuesday 64,200 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 1,217 seriously ill patients and 321 dependent on ventilators.
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 579,890 in 24 hours to 267.39 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 7,708 to 5.29 million. The United States had the most cases at 50.27 million, up 107,642, and the most deaths at 812,205, up 1,722.
New cases were rising in Europe and new fatalities in Russia were increasing, Dr Sumanee said.
